Arcade operators are increasingly looking at smarter ways to protect their venues from repeat offenders and new developments in access control technology could provide a practical answer.
At the centre of this is the growing use of AI-driven age verification systems, such as MyCheckr, designed by Innovative Technology. Not just for compliance, but as a wider safeguarding tool.
The concept is straightforward: operators can upload images of known offenders and receive an alert the moment that individual enters the premises.
For businesses dealing with persistent, organised theft, the appeal is obvious.
Across the sector, operators continue to report incidents involving individuals targeting machines with known vulnerabilities – often travelling between venues and repeating the same activity.
In some cases, losses can be significant, with reports of single incidents resulting in hundreds of pounds being taken from machines.
For operators, the challenge has been not just stopping these individuals once but recognising them quickly enough to prevent repeat offences.
From Age Verification to Venue Protection
Originally designed as an age verification and access control solution, MyCheckr is now being explored by operators as a broader security tool.
Installed at entry points, such as over-18 areas or main entrances, the system can:
- Detect (person of interest) as they enter
- Trigger real-time alerts to staff devices
- Allow teams to respond quickly and appropriately
Crucially, the system is operator-controlled. Any images used are uploaded and managed by the venue itself, based on its own assessment of risk.
While conversations around data and privacy are never far away, the focus from operators remains firmly on practicality and protecting the vulnerable.
The use of such systems aligns closely with established approaches already seen in retail, where known shoplifters are monitored and flagged to protect businesses.
As long as systems are used responsibly, with clear signage, appropriate data handling and a defined purpose, operators are increasingly confident in their role as part of a wider loss-prevention strategy.
Seeing It in Action
The technology was demonstrated at ARE Expo, where visitors were able to see a live access control setup, including entry-point integration and real-time alerting in action.
For many, this kind of physical demonstration is key.
As one visitor to the stand said, “It’s one thing talking about the technology, but when you can see it working at the door, it becomes immediately clear how it fits into a real venue.” Innovative Technology and E-Service will also be demonstrating MyCheckr at a number of Bacta regional meetings in the upcoming months.
